Drugstore foundation Makeup reviews Maybelline

NEW Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Instant Perfector 4-in-1 Matte Makeup: Review and Pics

Today I tried out Maybelline’s newest offering, a whipped matte makeup, that reminded me of one I used to use in my early 30’s (and loved!) Did this product fare as well? Read below to find out…

Maybelline’s New Foundation

Maybelline’s Claims about their New Product:

“Whipped Lightweight Texture”

“Blurs Pores”

“Conceals Blemishes”

“Mattifies”

“Evens Skintone”

As I disclose in my video review (below,) I used to be a HUGE fan of the whipped-type foundations. They apply faster than any other type of foundation, you don’t need to use anything other than your fingers, and (when I was younger, and less wrinkly) they gave my skin a smooth and even tone. It was quite the fad if I remember correctly in the mid 00’s, and several drugstore brands had their own version of the whipped spongy makeup that came in a jar.

I don’t recall seeing any other drugstore brands lately that still make this type of foundation, therefore, I’m glad that Maybelline is still producing the unique formula (albeit in a new way…more on that later…)

Do I agree with what they say about it?

Whipped lightweight texture?” Yup! And the good news is you no longer need to stick your fingers into a jar to get it, as it now comes in a hygienic-friendly squeeze tube.

Maybelline’s Previous Version of Whipped Foundation

“Blurs pores?” Absolutely. In fact, it almost looks like you’re using a tinted version of Benefit’s “The Porefessional” primer. I haven’t worn this type of makeup in several years, but as I glided the formula over my cheeks, I was reminded of why I used to enjoy it so much.

“Conceals Blemishes?” Meh. Unfortunately, I was able to really put this to the test, as my skin has been breaking out lately. I guess technically it covered the blemishes (a bit.) But keep in mind this is a light coverage foundation. So, in order to truly disguise my acne, I had to go in afterward with concealer on the individual spots.

“Mattifies?” Yes! In fact, what I love about this is that it dries down to a “soft” matte finish. The kind where you don’t need to use powder (unless you’re very oily?) before applying your other products on top. Again, I was reminded of how easy-peasy this formula can be, as I was joyfully applying my blush on top, without it “sticking” to a wet foundation.

“Evens Skintone?” You betcha. It evens it in a very natural way too. The kind where your freckles can still peek through, but somehow your overall complexion still appears more even-toned and polished.

So, what’s is the difference between this version of their whipped matte makeup, and the older version (Maybelline Dream Matte Mousse”)?

I put this to the test by gliding on a swatch of the older version next to the new. The newer version (Instant Age Rewind Perfector 4-in-1) felt a touch silkier gliding on. But if you have the older version, and are happy with it, I think you would be fine to use it up before purchasing this newer version.

How much product do you get?

The older version comes with .64 oz. in the jar. And there seems to be a bit of confusion on how much you get in the new one… Ulta’s website advertises it as .68 oz, the Maybelline website doesn’t mention it, and the tube itself says: 1 oz. so…. not really sure… I will say though that the tube looks really large, but I did have to shake and give it a good squeeze to get the product out. Just so you’re aware it’s not a completely full tube of product, but either way, you’re getting more product in the newer version than you did in the old.

It retails for $14.99 U.S. on the Ulta website. Which seems to be pretty on par now for drugstore foundations, as unfortunately everything has gone up in price over the past year or so.

Shade Range:

This comes in 6 “adaptable” shades. If you watch my video review of this you’ll see that I went with the shade light medium, which is too dark for me (when I’m not wearing self-tanner.) However, it still managed to blend out to a somewhat do-able shade (once I put it down my neck.) So, I can attest to the fact that these truly are adaptable! And I like drugstore foundations that have that quality, as we all know how challenging it can be to get the shade spot on-when attempting to purchase without being able to try on first!

My Thoughts:

So how did this work for me? Here’s the deal…. It made me cheeks and forehead look smooth and poreless. Unfortunately though, it wasn’t quite as fabulous on me as it used to be back in the day, and here is why. I’m of the age where I’m starting to get a bit of dryness and crepiness around my eyes and smile lines, and the formula just didn’t sit as well in those areas.

BUT… I still give this foundation an A+ review. Why you ask? Because for the right skin type this product is outstanding! I haven’t forgotten what this looked like on my skin back in the day. And I know there are readers out there without fine lines around the eyes who can ROCK this foundation.

Here’s Who I Suggest Will Love it:

*Those who need to run out the door quickly but don’t want to spend a lot of time on their makeup (seriously this can be applied in about 20 seconds, and you will have a polished “no make-up” look.)

*Those with normal to oily skin types.

*First time foundation users! This is a GREAT product to start with as it is virtually foolproof. You don’t need any application tools other than your fingers, it’s impossible to apply too much (as it blends out seamlessly.) In fact, when my toddler, who has already shown an interest in makeup, comes to me in her teenage years wanting to wear makeup… well, I hope this product or some incarnation of it is still around, because I absolutely would start her out with this.

*Younger users with supple skin. Teens, 20’s 30’s etc. But don’t count this out if you’re older (especially if you have normal to oily skin.) You can always apply a bit on the center of the cheeks, forehead, and chin to give a smooth look, while avoiding the under-eye area.

Have you tried this out yet? What about the older version of it? I’m curious to hear your thoughts below!
